How to Prepare for the Physical Move
Preparing for the physical move begins with checking and re-checking a “to do” list. Identify essential items that must be kept with the person or family throughout the period of the move. A week’s worth of clothing, for example, can be packed into a suitcase. Toiletries can be similarly stored in a toiletry case or plastic bag. Some experts suggest that when planning the physical move; pack a suitcase as though planning a week’s vacation and box up everything else for moving day.
Two Months Prior
Evaluate potential
moving companies for value, care and work ethic. Most
moving companies, particularly those moving long distance, need lead time to schedule a move. They will require a list of appliances, large furniture, estimated number of boxes and other key details. Begin any necessary trip planning such as booking airlines, hotels or rental cars necessary for the move.
One Month Prior
One month before the physical move, purchase all boxing materials necessary for packing each room. Bubble wrap for breakables, separators for plates, cups and glasses will provide the necessary cushioning for transport. Begin the packing process moving from the rooms used least to the rooms used most. Typically the kitchen is the last room packed.
Two Weeks Prior to Move
When moving locally, plan a day to drive the route to the new home. Identify areas of construction, bad turns and traffic patterns. This will be important information to have on the day of the move. During this period it is a good idea to evaluate meal needs in order to prevent overstocking any perishables that will not be consumed prior to move. Have the vehicle serviced.
One Week Prior to Move
Verify any reservations that have been made with the airline, the hotel, the rental car, the rental truck company and the
movers. Pack the kitchen and invest in disposable table settings to minimize on washing or unpacked china. All bedrooms should be packed. Plan to do laundry two days prior to the actual moving day.
One Day Prior to Move
Pack food into a cooler including fruits, vegetables, water and sandwiches. Avoid caffeinated products as these lead to frequent bathroom breaks. Load the car with entertainment essentials for long traveling or begin the pre-move car packing where smaller items can be moved locally before the large furniture is moved.
